Whether
you are ready to join the league or just want a taste of roller
derby, Roller Girl Boot Camp offers a refresher course on roller
skating and a week of intense fun and exercise. Four nights of roller
derby training will provide beginner and advanced level female
skaters the basic skills and knowledge to pass tryouts in February or
join the referee squad.
The
event includes one night of orientation and four nights of physical
challenges for adults ages 18 and older. Meet bold, outgoing new
friends and discover a part of you you haven't expressed in a long
time. Early registration of $20 expires December 1, 2011; $35
registration through January 22nd, or until sold out. On-site
registration is available starting January 22nd for $35 or until all
slots are sold. Check our home page the 'week of' for updates.

Trying
out for the Derby Devils
After
Roller Girl Boot Camp or your own period of practicing, you may
decide you are ready to try out for the league. The Savannah Derby
Devils offer three tryouts dates each year from at the Garden City
Gym, 160 Wheat Hill Rd./Priscilla Thomas Way. The 2012 dates are:
* Sunday, February
19, 4-6 p.m.
* Tuesday, May 22,
8-10 p.m.
* Tuesday,
September 11, 8-10 p.m.
Skater
Requirements
Be
female, age 18 or older, and willing to attend three 2-hour practices
a week and compete a number of times a year.
Have
a positive attitude necessary to build up a team. Our league is "by
the skaters, for the skaters", meaning it's all on us.
In addition to skating, you’re expected to contribute time and
energy to league projects.
Pay
$25/month dues.
Own
quad speed skates, helmet, elbow and knee pads, wrist guards and a
mouth guard within 30 days of trying out. Estimated cost of gear
is at least $200.
Pass
two tests based on the minimum skills requirements and
the official rules of the Women’s Flat Track Derby
Association.
Pass
a SDD Basic Skills Test at try-outs which requires you safely
demonstrate the following:
1. Good Skating
Posture - Bend at knees and hips with shoulders back. Swings
arms fluidly.
2. Smooth
Strides - Maintain steady, confident, fluid strides and use both
feet to push forward on the straight-aways
3. Confident
Crossovers - Perform smooth crossovers while going into and
coming out of turns.
4. T-Stops -
Come to a complete stop by dragging one skate behind the other, using
proper form, without losing balance.
5. One-foot
glides - Skate on one foot for the length of a straight-away
with good balance.
6. Self-propel -
Skate forward while keeping all eight wheels on the floor.
7. Skiing -
Sway and serve fluidly from one side of the skating lane to the
other.
8. Squatting-
Bend low at knees and hips with shoulders back while continueing to
skate forward.
9. Falls -
Perform safely, accurately, and naturally with quick recovery:
o Right
Single Knee Fall
o Left
Single Knee Fall
o Double
Knee Fall
o 180
Degree Single Knee Fall Turn
10. Weaving -
Move through cones placed six feet apart, covering both
straight-aways and turns.
11. Speed - Skate 20 laps in 5 minutes on a roller derby track.
